Depersonalization in the news
You've come to this website for a reason. Maybe you're curious about Health and Wellness Coaching in general. Or, you've read the books about Depersonalization/ Derealization, and identify with the symptoms. But the thought of going to a psychiatrist, of being labeled mentally ill, leaves you cold. You want to find an expert, and someone you can trust. Are you in the right place? Perhaps. But remember that "experts" built the Titanic. Coaching approaches things differently. There's no expert/client dynamic. It's a partnership. And in this venue, one of the partners has spent a lifetime studying the very thing that brings you here. Coaching accepts you as you are with no stigma attached. No judgement, and no boxing you into a convenient diagnosis that will follow you and keep you from moving forward in life.
The chances of finding a psychiatrist or therapist thoroughly familiar with Depersonalization-Derealization Disorder are slim to none. Why? DDD was perceived as pretty rare up until the 1990s when the Internet brought it out of obscurity. It still has very little presence in the med school curriculum. Since it can be a symptom of other disorders, more often than not it is written off as such.
Thankfully, great progress has been made in recent decades. Clearly defining the line between established coaching practices and sharing knowledge about DDD, your coach will wear two hats, one as a consultant and the other as a coach. Having spoken to hundreds of DDD patients over the course of 30 years, no aspect of it is taboo. Learning more about DDD will help you communicate effectively.
Health and Wellness Coaching is a science-based program designed to help you make your own decisions and develop a plan for reaching specific goals within a designated time frame. These goals can relate to anything, from getting fit,
to moving on from a relationship, to finding a new job, to finishing that novel you can't seem to get done. (Remember that Jeff was a writer and editor at major magazines for years). Some of coaching's tools (ie. neuroplasticity and mindful meditation) have been shown to be helpful for depersonalized individuals. But our services are not limited to people suffering from depersonalization.. Coaching can apply to virtually any area of life. The goal is to remove the obstacles that prevent you from being the person you want to be.
